Madurai Kamaraj University, a state university founded in 1966, was designated as a University with Potential for Excellence in ‘Teaching, Research, and Outreach’ in 2007. Acts, Statutes, Ordinances, and Regulations govern the University. NAAC has given the university “A++” rating for the fourth cycle (2021). 809 Ph.D. Scholars received doctoral degrees at the Golden Jubilee Convocation in 2017. On the 14th of September 2017, the HRD Ministry granted the University Second Rank in the category of Government Institutions in the “SWACHHTA” Ranking of Higher Educational Institutions in the country.
4 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards, 8 FNAs, 8 FNAScs, 11 FAScs, 2 TWAS, a Senior Spallanzani Fellow, and 16 Tamil Nadu Scientist Awards have been bestowed to the University for its unwavering pursuit of knowledge creation and dissemination. Fourteen University faculty members, including the current Vice-Chancellor, have been promoted to Vice-Chancellor. Several alumni have gone on to become IAS/IPS/IRS officers.
In the history of Madurai Kamaraj University, the year 1970 by the ingenuities of Prof. K. Rajayyan and Prof. N. Subhramanian, keystone for School of Historical Studies was laid in which because of the initiatives of the aforementioned Professors, two different departments as Ancient History and Modern History were established. In the same year of inception the departments propounded courses of M.A., M.Litt., and Ph.D. and organized regular classes. Exactly after six years of time to enhance the student’s expertise in Medieval History an exclusive department was also added into the feather.
Madurai Kamaraj University established the School system in 1976 to help students achieve excellence in their studies, and the three departments of Ancient History, Medieval History, and Modern History merged to form the School of Historical Studies. Following the establishment of the school, new courses such as M.Phil. and other diploma studies for Archaeology and Area Studies were added to the conventional M.A., M.Litt., and Ph.D. program.
